Before You Hire a boat:

  • Choose a Reputable Company:  Select a company with a proven safety record and well-maintained boats.  Read online reviews, ask for recommendations, and ensure they adhere to all necessary safety regulations.

  • Understand Your Skill Level:  Be honest about your boating experience.  If you're a beginner, book a skippered hire or consider taking a boating safety course before venturing out on your own.

  • Check the Weather Conditions:  Always check the weather forecast before your trip.  Avoid boating in rough seas, strong winds, or thunderstorms. We use Seabreeze, a website that shows the wind and tide.

  • Know the Regulations: Familiarize yourself with Sydney's boating regulations, including speed limits, right-of-way rules, and designated swimming zones.

During Your Briefing:

  • Pay Attention: The pre-departure briefing is crucial. Listen attentively as the company representative goes over safety procedures, including life jacket use, fire extinguisher operation, emergency communication protocols (VHF radio usage), and anchoring techniques.

  • Ask Questions:  Don't hesitate to ask questions if anything is unclear.

  • Life Jackets: Ensure everyone on board has a properly fitted life jacket. The life jacket size (adult/child) should be appropriate for each individual.

During the boat hire:

  • Follow Instructions:  If you've opted for self-drive hire, listen to the instructions. Don't exceed the speed limit, maintain a safe distance from other vessels, and avoid navigating in unfamiliar or restricted areas.

  • Skippered Hire:  If you're a beginner or simply want to relax, consider a skippered hire.  Our qualified captain will take care of navigation, ensuring a safe and stress-free journey.

Sun and Heat Safety:

  • Sun Protection: Our Sydney sun is strong. Protect yourself and your crew with sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and long-sleeved clothing.

  • Hydration: Stay hydrated throughout the day by drinking plenty of water.

  • Beware of Heatstroke:  Be aware of the signs of heatstroke, such as dizziness, nausea, and headaches.

Communication:

  • Mobile Phones: While not a substitute for a marine radio, bring charged mobile phones for emergencies. However, avoid relying solely on mobile phones for communication as reception can be limited on the water.

  • Marine Radio (VHF):  Our boat is equipped with a VHF radio, familiarize yourself with its basic operation for emergency communication.

General Safety Tips:

  • Alcohol and Drugs: Never operate a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Both impair judgment and reaction time, significantly increasing the risk of accidents.

  • Appoint a Lookout: If there are multiple people on board, designate someone to act as a lookout, especially while underway, to watch for obstacles and other vessels.

  • Be Aware of Your Surroundings:  Maintain a safe distance from swimmers, other boats, and any hazards like rocks near clifs and beaches. It is good to as someone to watch for rocks from the front of the boat while parking on the beach.

  • Stay Seated While Underway:  While tempting to move around the boat freely, avoid doing so while underway.  Sit down and hold on to a railing for stability, especially in rough waves.

  • Children: Always supervise children closely while on board. Provide them with life jackets and keep them within arm's reach at all times.

In Case of Emergency:

  • Know the Emergency Procedures: Review the emergency procedures outlined during the briefing. This includes knowing the location of fire extinguishers, first-aid kits, and the protocol for contacting emergency services via VHF radio.

  • Stay Calm: If an emergency arises, stay calm and follow the emergency procedures you learned during the briefing.

  • By following these safety guidelines and prioritizing responsible boating practices, you can ensure a fun-filled and safe adventure on your Sydney boat hire. Remember, a little preparation and awareness go a long way.
